Child-Centered Program
Our program stresses child-centered learning, with ample opportunity for growth and decision-making. Teachers interact closely with children, and respect each child as a unique individual.
- Children participate in structured activities, free play and active outdoor play; each class offers age-appropriate toys and activities.
- Children are encouraged to make choices, and are never forced to participate in any activity.
- Children enjoy art, story time and circle time each day.
- Some classes include special enrichment programs such as music and language.
- Older children also take educational field trips: airport, Governor's mansion, planetarium, bowling, game ranch, High Museum, Fox Theater, etc.
- Parents are welcome to visit at any time.
We've Been Doing this a Long Time Phoenix has been taking care of Decatur kids for 25 great years! The school was founded in 1979 by a group of parents who, like today's parents, wanted a better childcare alternative for their children. A quarter of a century later, we're still going strong and our program is better than ever!

It Feels Like a Family!
We often hear parents and teachers comment that they love Phoenix because it feels like a big family. Parents, kids and teachers all know each other and often linger in the halls or on the playground talking and playing. We sponsor picnics, parties and other special activities for families to get to know each other. This gives parents and siblings more opportunities to become a part of the Phoenix family. Here we are in the Decatur Fourth of July Parade!
We Embrace Diversity
The Phoenix School does not discriminate in its dealings with children, parents, staff or visitors. We consider differences in age, gender, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, birth status, sexual orientation and political affiliation to be essential to the heterogeneity and rich diversity we offer. We expect all parents, staff and visitors to show tolerance and sensitivity so that children will learn to value, respect and enjoy people's similiarities and differences.
